Overview

Tom Griffin is a trial attorney with more than 30 years of experience developing, trying and settling complex business, financial and commercial litigation cases, both as plaintiff’s counsel and defense counsel, for a wide range of individual and corporate clients. Before he began his legal career, Tom worked as an auditor with a multi-national public accounting firm. After he obtained his CPA, Tom followed a three-generation family tradition into the practice of law.

Tom began his legal career as an associate at Winston & Strawn, but left to form his own firm in the early 1990’s when he was offered the opportunity to act as lead counsel for a high net worth businessman and his network of companies in a series of complex legal disputes with the clients’ business partners, accountants, bankers, the FDIC and the IRS. Both at Winston & Strawn and in the years since, Tom has litigated a broad and diverse spectrum of cases, including class actions, RICO claims, bank fraud claims, trade secret claims, FDCPA claims, contract claims, patent and copyright claims, corporate governance breach of fiduciary duty claims, partner and shareholder disputes, employment and non-compete disputes, accounting and legal malpractice and malfeasance claims and estate and trust contests.

Tom has substantial experience in forming and advising start-up and mid-size businesses, and in negotiating and drafting complex contracts, including executive employment, compensation, non-compete and severance agreements, partnership and shareholder agreements, limited liability company operating agreements and business sale and merger contracts. Having worked with many successful business owners over his career, Tom also has become well-versed in helping his clients with managing their business and personal wealth. As a former CPA and business manager himself, Tom has a great depth of knowledge and experience in financial matters, tax issues, corporate governance and business ethics.

Tom has tried cases in Illinois, Delaware and New York, and has appeared in other cases across the country that have settled prior to trial. Tom has argued appeals in both the state and federal courts of Illinois, and has participated in the preparation of Amici Curiae Briefs to the United States Supreme Court. Tom also has acted as lead counsel in both the prosecution and defense of class action cases.
