Overview

Ryan is a litigation attorney who handles cases in state and federal courts around the country. Ryan’s litigation practice is primarily focused on insurance coverage litigation. He has litigated cases in California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia.

Ryan’s insurance coverage practice involves handling disputes on behalf of domestic and international insurers providing primary and excess commercial general liability and professional liability insurance. In that regard, he has litigated a wide variety of complex and large exposure lawsuits against sophisticated insureds, including large publicly traded corporations, public entities, risk pools, and law firms. Ryan also has extensive experience handling first party claims, inclusive of claims with complex time element coverage issues. These matters have included minor property losses as well as claims with exposure in excess of $100 million involving adjustment teams, forensic accountants, and financial experts. Ryan has also successfully defended numerous claims seeking bad faith damages, including for bad faith failure to settle, and statutory penalties. In addition to insurance coverage litigation, Ryan also provides insurance coverage opinions, and, with the assistance of foreign counsel, has provided coverage advice on American claims subject to foreign laws.

In addition to insurance coverage work, Ryan also has considerable business litigation experience, which includes defending and prosecuting complex contract disputes, claims for breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, tortious interference, unfair competition, defamation and intellectual property infringement. He also has defended several class action claims and has experience handling claims for emergency relief.

Ryan has also devoted hundreds of hours throughout his career to pro bono work. These pro bono matters have included prosecution of civil rights claims, defense of individuals seeking emergency relief from deportation, and a variety of other legal assistance to persons of limited financial means.

Super Lawyers publication has recognized Ryan in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 based on peer recognition and professional achievement.  The Super Lawyers List recognizes no more than 5% percent of attorneys in each state.  Ryan was also repeatedly named an Emerging Lawyer by Law Bulletin Publishing Company, which is a designation awarded to only 2% of the lawyers under 40 years of age.

While in law school, Ryan externed for Judge Wayne R. Andersen (Ret.) of the Northern District of Illinois. He also served as the Notes & Comments Editor of the Chicago–Kent Law Review.
