Overview

Christopher Shannon counsels clients on complex matters, including insurance coverage and bad faith matters, in jurisdictions throughout the U.S.  He is licensed both in Colorado, where he lived and practiced for almost 10 years, and Illinois.  Chris’ experience in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West, matched with his experience in Illinois and the Midwest, allows him to assist clients dealing with complex matters across numerous areas.

In addition to advising insurer clients with respect to first-party, professional liability, and general liability claims, Christopher litigates on behalf of insurers, businesses, and insureds with regularity in courts throughout the U.S. Christopher also has significant experience representing and advising London market and international insurers regarding a wide range of claims.  He is able to deftly navigate the intricacies of the London insurance market and efficiently represent those insurers on complex coverage issues both outside of litigation and in courts.

Christopher also represents businesses and individuals in litigation matters in Colorado, Illinois and numerous courts throughout the U.S. where he has obtained temporary admission.  He has significant experience advising clients in all aspects of litigation including discovery, settlement negotiations, through trial.

Notable Decisions

Christopher has obtained excellent results for his clients in litigated matters, such as the following:

  • Successfully litigated enforcement of settlement agreement and release, and briefed and argued opposing party’s appeal to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. He successfully litigated the question of whether a prior settlement agreement precluded a later claim and recovered his client’s attorney’s fees in the process.  Platinum Supplemental Insurance, Inc. v. Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company, 989 F.3d 556 (7th Cir. 2021);
  • Obtained motion for judgment on the pleadings on behalf of London insurers in the Northern District of Illinois where insured sought coverage for suit seeking a recovery in excess of $10 million. Christopher successfully argued the claim presented did not fall within the insurance policy’s coverage grant and obtained a total victory on behalf of his clients.  Those Certain Underwriters at Lloyd’s, London Severally Subscribing to Policy No. MPL-0000343-01 v. Karris, 2021 WL 493038 (N.D.Ill. Feb. 10, 2021);
  • Successfully obtained judgment in favor of domestic insurer in the Northern District of California on policy rescission in a legal malpractice claim. Christopher persuaded the court that the insured’s prior knowledge of dismissal of client’s claims due to the client’s failure to respond to court order placed insured on notice of possible claim that should have been disclosed in policy application.  Westport Insurance Corporation v. Bornstein, 2020 WL 7133771 (N.D. Cal. Apr. 1, 2020);
  • Successfully litigated question regarding enforcement of forum selection clause in first-party property insurance policy on behalf of London insurers. Enforcement of policy’s forum selection clause resulted in favorable settlement of claim.  Connor Group v. Certain Underwriters at Lloyd’s, London, 2018 WL 2937443 (S.D.Ohio, June 12, 2018);
  • Obtained judgment on behalf of domestic insurer in Florida arguing that insured’s reference to existence of malpractice coverage in legal malpractice action was sufficient to demonstrate knowledge of potential claim and trigger his client’s prior knowledge exclusion. Farbstein v. Westport Insurance Corporation, 2017 WL 3425327 (M.D.Fla., Aug. 9, 2017).
